Is a waterless dog shampoo safe for your pooch

Waterless pet shampoo has been revolutionary for those of us with reluctant pets who simply hate bath time. It’s a great alternative compared to getting just as wet as your pet, using copious amounts of towels and the inevitable wet dog smell that permeates the house for hours afterwards. But are all waterless shampoos on offer safe? Unfortunately the answer is no.

Not all waterless shampoos are made the same way or to the same standards, so it’s important to do your research before purchasing one. Avoid using any that are aerosol based, this can be dangerous for dogs and other animals who are susceptible to breathing issues such as Pugs and Bulldogs.

Secondly, check the ingredient list, even if they claim it’s a natural waterless shampoo. DMDM Hydantoin is an antimicrobial formaldehyde releasing preservative. It’s usually listed on the ingredients as DMDM Hydantoin or DMDH Hydantoin. When formaldehyde became unpopular as a preservative due to its strong links with cancer, a “slow releasing” formaldehyde was released called DMDM Hydantoin. This simply releases small amounts of formaldehyde over time instead of having to put formaldehyde on the product’s ingredients list.
